Description
The Church of St Michael is a parish church built between 1756 and 1758, attributed to either Roger Eykyn or possibly Thomas Farnolls Pritchard, with restoration work completed in 1872. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features tile roofs. The church consists of a nave with short transepts, a chancel, and a west tower.
The west tower has three stages and is topped with a crenellated parapet. It includes a belfry window with a 2-centred head and a 2-light window with Y-tracery on the first stage. The ground floor features a Tudor arch doorhead with an ogee label, a fanlight, and a two-leaf panelled door. The nave has two bays, with two windows that also have Y-tracery. The transept has a stone coped verge to the gable and a Y-tracery window. The chancel's east window, added in 1872, has two trefoiled lights beneath a 2-centred head.
Inside, there is a west gallery supported by plain wooden posts, and the interior of the east window features engaged respond shafts. The nave roof consists of five bays with arch braced collars that support king-posts to the trusses. Most of the fittings are from 1872. The tower staircase includes splat balusters that may date from the late 17th century, and some 17th-century panelling has been reused as fixed benches beneath the west gallery.
