Description
Slingfield Mills includes a mill chimney and boiler house built between 1864 and 1870 for Thomas Lea. The chimney is made of red brick with blue and buff brick bands and decorative features. It has a tapering square plan and stands about 180 feet high, although it was reduced by approximately 40 feet in 1981. The structure has nine stages, each defined by blue brick bands, and features clasping angle buttresses with alternating bands of blue and buff bricks.
Each face of the chimney has alternating stages with a central narrow arched blank recess, and the arches and impost band are made of buff brick. The top stage contains a pair of similar arched recesses on each face. The attached boiler house is constructed of brick painted white and has a slate hipped roof with a cogged brick eaves cornice. It is two storeys high and consists of five bays. The ground floor has a large window with barred sashes, featuring central pivoted opening sections. The first floor windows are set in an arcade with flush key blocks and moulded imposts to the arches. There are some 20th-century alterations. The boiler house is included for its group value only.
