Description

The Church of St Michael in Stourport on Severn is a Grade II listed building that began construction in 1881 but was left unfinished when it was consecrated in 1910. It was never completed and was partially demolished in 1980. Designed by George Gilbert Scott, the work was continued after his death by his son, John Oldrid Scott. The church features a sandstone facing over a brick core. What remains includes the footings for the west wall and substantial parts of the north and south walls, including the south porch. The porch has a steep gable with crocketted niches on either side and above the cusped archway, along with decorated spandrels in the angles. The gables are coped and capped with a cross as a finial. Inside, there is a vaulted ceiling and a Decorated style inner arch with clustered shafts, along with an original door featuring ironwork. There are two surviving windows with Decorated style tracery on either side of the porch and lower embrasures for two additional windows to the east. The north door, also with original ironwork, is located in the heavily buttressed north wall. Polygonal stair turrets are present at the northeast and southeast corners. Inside, remnants of shafts for aisle arcading and an arch to the south chancel aisle can be seen. This church is the third built on the site, replacing a brick church constructed in 1782, which itself replaced a medieval building.
