Description

The Church of St John the Baptist is a parish church built in 1772, with some alterations made in the late 19th century. It is constructed of brick and features a hipped tile roof. The church consists of a west tower, nave, and chancel. The west tower has two stages separated by a dentilled brick string, with the lower part quoined. It is topped with a crenellated parapet and a dentilled brick cornice. The belfry stage includes deep semi-circular headed recesses that house semi-circular headed louvred openings. The nave also has a crenellated parapet and five deep semi-circular headed recesses containing semi-circular headed windows. There is a 19th-century timber porch located in the second bay from the left. The chancel comprises three bays, with a vestry in the left bay and two windows similar to those in the nave. The east window is larger and features three 19th-century ashlar lights.

Inside, the nave has aisles formed by five bay arcades with semi-circular arches, and the aisles are adorned with modillioned cornices. A gallery at the west end and above the aisles has a panelled front. The chancel arch is semi-circular, and there is a font in Gothick style. A notable feature is a 14th-century recumbent stone effigy of a knight located at the south-east corner of the nave. The church also contains a series of impressive wall tablets dating from the late 18th to early 19th centuries in the aisles and chancel, including a memorial to Helen Knight, who died in 1801, created by Flaxman.
