Description

Bretforton Grange is a monastic grange that has been converted into a house. It dates back to the early 14th century and was remodeled and extended in 1635, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed from coursed lias rubble with ashlar dressings, topped with a Cotswold stone and tile roof.

The original 14th-century range runs north to south, while a subsidiary service range extends west from the southern corner and features stacks at both ends. A 17th-century wing projects to the south from this range and includes a central stack.

On the east front, the 14th-century range, which is two storeys high and has a gable-lit attic, features stone coped verges and stepped buttresses. There is a 20th-century external staircase on the right side, while to the left are two 3-light stone mullioned windows from the 17th century. The 17th-century wing is set back to the left and has a stair turret at the angle, standing two storeys tall with a 2-light window on the first floor. The entrance to the right has a 20th-century stone gabled porch. In the left-hand corner, there is an entrance that has been converted into a window, which features a triangular head and a square label with the inscription "WC 1635" on its stops.

Inside, there is a 17th-century staircase with massive turned balusters and a moulded handrail. The roof of the 14th-century range is constructed with common rafters, each couple having an arch-braced collar and vertical ashlar pieces. The ground floor of this range includes an early 14th-century undercroft that is divided into four bays by simple chamfered ribs.
