Description

Barn House is a house built in 1703, extended around 1908 by A N Prentice, and later by Guy Pemberton. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and snecked rubble, topped with a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys with an attic and originally consists of three bays, featuring a drip course and 2-light rebated and chamfered mullioned windows. The three hipped dormers are adorned with ball finials. The central door has a cyma-moulded surround, and above it is a plaque inscribed "HBW 1703" along with a Phoenix fire insurance plaque. The gables are coped with chimneys, and each side has a slightly lower bay added by Prentice. The first-floor windows are mostly within the gables, with four lights, except for the left-hand window, which has three lights. The right-hand gable is coped and features a weathervane.

To the right, there is a single-storey canted bay that connects the main house to a former barn, added by Pemberton. This bay has a 3-light mullioned window flanked by oval windows and a door on the left with a cyma surround. The barn's gable is half-hipped and includes a window with five Tudor-arched lights and two transoms. At the rear of the house, the former barn doorway in the west wall has been filled with a bay window that has curved sides, topped by a gable with a lunette.

Inside, both ground floor rooms of the original house feature chamfered spine beams, with the left room showcasing exposed common joists. The staircase has a closed string and turned balusters. The former barn includes a moulded stone fireplace with a canted head, is open to the roof, and has tie-beam trusses with collars and struts, some of which have been partly renewed in softwood.
