Description

A pair of cottages, probably dating from around 1600, with additions from the 17th century and alterations in the 19th century. The cottages have been combined into a single dwelling. The construction is a mix of timber framing with painted brick and rendered infill on a rubble base, and coursed limestone rubble. The roof is thatched in places and tiled in others, with a brick stack on the main ridge and another at the south gable end. The building has four bays aligned north/south. The central two bays are timber-framed and tiled, the north bay is timber-framed and thatched, and the south bay is rubble and has a steeply pitched thatched roof. It is a single-storey building with an attic, featuring dormers. The central section has four framing panels from the sill to the wall-plate. The north bay has two panels in the same way, and contains a truncated collar and tie-beam truss with four struts at the north end. The west front has an irregular arrangement of windows. The north bay has a single-light casement window on the ground floor and a 19th-century ledged and battened door. The central two bays have two two-light casement windows on the ground floor, two gabled dormers with two-light casement windows, and a 19th-century gabled brick porch with a 20th-century half-glazed door. The south bay has a two-light casement window, an eyebrow dormer with a two-light casement, and the present main entrance with a 20th-century door. Inside the south bay, a large fireplace, a bread oven, and a winder staircase remain – this is possibly the oldest part of the building.
