Description
The Galton Memorial, located about 11 yards east of the Church of St John the Baptist, is a mid-19th century vault made of sandstone ashlar. It has a large square plan, featuring a moulded plinth and cornice, with a shallow pyramidal capping that includes a central circular vent. The sides of the vault display a panelled frieze and blind intersecting semi-circular headed arcading, with an impost band that runs around each side and corner columns that have acanthus-moulded capitals, although these are mostly worn away. On a small plaque on the south side, it is inscribed: "THE/ FORMER VAULT/ OF/ HUBERT JOHN/ BARCLAY GALTON/ OF/ WARLEY, SALOP/ AND OF/ EWAN CAMERON/ GALTON/ OF/ EYNSHAM, OXON". Additionally, part of the damaged chamfered sandstone ashlar base of a former railed enclosure remains. This large monument prominently dominates the small churchyard.
