Description
The Gwillim Memorial, located approximately 15 meters northwest of the Church of St Dubricius in Whitchurch, is a family vault dating from the mid to late 18th century. It features a part railed enclosure with memorials and a central chest tomb, constructed from sandstone ashlar. The enclosure has a rectangular plan and consists of a low ashlar wall on the north, south, and east sides, while the west side has a higher ashlar wall. This wall includes a central pedimented inscription panel, which is flanked by decorative scrolls and shells, and features a central semi-circular headed niche with smaller square-headed niches on either side. The inscription panel reads "Impentis/ Thomes Gwillim Armigeret/ Elizabae uxoris suae AD 1744". The central chest tomb has a rectangular plan with a moulded plinth and capping, adorned with elaborate scrolled foliage ornament surrounding an inset white marble inscription panel. The corners of the tomb are accentuated by convex piers with gadrooning below the capping. This memorial commemorates Elizabeth Stuart, the wife of Thomas Gwillim, and includes a lengthy dedication to her.
