Description

The Old Court Hotel is a former manor house that has been converted into a hotel. It dates back to the 16th century, with additions from the 17th century and alterations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed from coursed and square sandstone rubble, featuring ashlar dressings and a stone slate roof. It has an irregular E-shaped plan, with a prominent porch at the center facing north. There are 20th-century additions at the rear on the southwest side, and two external stacks at the back, one of which is now enclosed by a modern extension.

The north front of the hotel has two storeys and attics, showcasing mainly stone mullioned windows with square-headed hoodmoulds. Notable features include a range of five-light stone mullioned windows on the gable end of the west cross-wing, and a tall three-light mullioned and transomed window to the west of the two-storey gabled porch, which has a heavy ledged door. To the east of the porch, there is another five-light window, along with a series of altered similar mullioned windows on the east gable end of the cross-wing.

Inside, the hall features two storeys and three bays, with a panelled cross-beamed ceiling that has moulded members. The internal partitions are timber-framed with close-studding, and there are two blocked doorways with four-centred heads flanking an inserted doorway leading to the screen at the west end. The hall also has a large open fireplace. The Old Court Hotel is considered a fine example of a stone-built manor house from this period, and it may also incorporate elements of a timber-framed house.
