Description
Rudge's Barn is a barn built in the late 17th century or early 18th century, although it has been greatly altered. The structure is made of coursed square rubble with weatherboarding on the gable of the porch and the north-west gable end of the north-east wing. It features 20th-century slate roofs. The barn has a straight range of five bays that runs from north-east to south-west, with a central gabled porch that projects forward. There are later single-storey extensions on either side with catslide roofs, and the north-east wing consists of three bays. Notable features include a circular owl hole in the south-west gable and loop air vents. The inclined strut trusses have been partly renewed. A date of 1706 is inscribed to the right of the porch along with the initials "T T J". The Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England mentions a different datestone dated 1693 located to the north of the north-east wing. The barn is situated near the site of a Roman villa.
