Description

Rocklands is a house dating from the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble, with brick architraves, and the main elevation is rendered. The building has a broadly U-shaped plan, facing southwest. The central entrance is flanked by axial stacks, and the style is that of a castellated villa.

The front of the house has two storeys and a close-set, small-scale crenellation. There are three windows, mostly glazing bar sashes of 2-light (central) and 3-light (outer) configuration, with Tudor arched heads to each light, set beneath square hood moulds. The ground floor projects and is also crenellated, with a veranda on the right-hand side featuring two Tudor arched bays to the front and one to the return, supported by slender square-masonry piers. A shallow gable covers the central Tudor arched porch, which has a partly-glazed door with a Tudor arch inside, flanked by glazing bar windows, each with two segment-headed lights under Tudor arches.

The southwest return has a 1:3:1 bay arrangement. The left four bays are also crenellated, with a central 18th-century core rising as a three-storey block with crenellations returned to the side parapets. A string course runs above the first floor, and glazing bar sash windows have cambered heads. A central canted bay window is present on the ground floor, with a similar crenellated parapet. Flanking outer bays have glazing bar sash windows with two lights, Tudor arched heads, and square hood moulds, matching those on the main front.

The interior features fine cast iron fireplaces in the upper rooms.
