Description

Nos 65, 66, and 67 are a row of three houses built around 1908-1910 by Ernest Newton for Richard Biddulph Martin. The houses are constructed from coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and feature a stone tiled roof laid in diminishing courses, complete with overhanging eaves and large ashlar stacks—two on the main ridge, one at the rear centre of the main ridge, and one at each end. The design is H-plan with a rear central wing, and the buildings are single storey with an attic, including half-dormers.

The windows throughout are leaded casements with cambered heads, except for the dormer windows. On the south front elevation, the central range has four ground floor windows with two lights, four gabled half-dormers featuring weatherboarding within the gables and 3-light windows, and a small circular landing window located at the centre and at the outer upper corners beneath the eaves. Below these circular windows are the three main entrances, which have round-headed archways with moulded surrounds and dropped keyblocks, leading into small lobbies with half-glazed entrance doors.

The gable ends of the cross-wings to the left and right of the south front include 4-light ground floor windows and 3-light attic windows. Inscribed on a quoin at the upper right corner of the right gable end is "AD 1910". At each side of the cross-wings, behind the end stacks, are lean-to wash-houses with catside roofs, with the wash-house for the central dwelling located in the rear wing.
