Description
The Yew Tree Public House is a house, dating to the mid-17th century, with later alterations in the late 18th, mid-19th and late 20th centuries. It is constructed of limestone rubble, partly coursed and rendered, with ashlar dressings. The roofs are covered in plain tiles and have gable-end parapets with gabled finials, and 19th-century brick stacks, one at the west end, and a large, tall stack on the south side of the south wing roof. The plan is L-shaped; the main part comprises two bays aligned north/south, with an intersecting wing of two bays at the south end. The building is two storeys and has an attic, with a chamfered plinth. The east front has one ground floor and two first floor 16-pane sash windows, each with a moulded architrave. The main entrance, in the left bay, is sheltered by a flat canopy on shaped brackets, has 20th-century panelled double doors and a transom light with two glazing bars. The gable end of the south wing is flush with the main part and has a 12-pane sash window on the ground and first floors, with a moulded architrave. There is also an original 17th-century chamfered mullioned attic window of two lights. An attic light is also present in the north gable end. The south elevation, facing the road, has a 19th-century three-light casement window and a 19th-century gabled dormer, also with a three-light casement. A substantial 19th-century wing runs parallel to the main part at the angle with the south wing. Adjoining the west gable end of the south wing is a 19th-century single-storey and attic addition of one bay, with a three-light casement in its south elevation, and another smaller gabled wing at its south end.
