Description
Forge House is a shop that possibly dates back to the 17th century, with some remains from the 14th century and alterations made around 1900. The building features rendered timber-framing and limestone rubble, topped with a stone slate roof. It is one storey high with an attic and includes a gabled cross-wing on the left side. The ground floor has a continuous shop front from around 1900, which consists of three plate-glass windows and two doorways. The cross-wing has a timber sashed oriel window on the first floor, with glazing bars on the upper sashes. The main section of the building contains an attic dormer. The right-hand gable wall is made of exposed rubble and has a coped chimney. At the rear, there is a parallel range that features a mullioned attic dormer facing north. The left-hand wall of the cross-wing is rendered on the first floor and has a small timber window with two pointed trefoiled lights, likely from the 14th century. Inside, the ground floor room of the cross-wing has a stone inglenook with a bressummer, while the upper storey was not accessible during the survey in December 1986.
