Barn At Sundial Farm

The barn at Sundial Farm is a mid-18th century structure that has undergone some alterations in the mid-20th century. It is built from coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring some timber-framing with brick infill and weatherboarding. The roof is plain tiled and includes parapets at the main gable ends and the lean-to outshuts.

The barn consists of three bays aligned north to south, with a central wagon bay that has opposed cart entries. On the west side, there is a large two-bay gabled midstrey, flanked by lean-to outshuts that have catslide roofs. The main part of the barn includes ventilation slits, a square window at the north end, and a square sundial located at the apex of the south gable. The east cart entry has been altered in the 20th century. The main west elevation gable end of the midstrey features weatherboarding above the double doors. The roof eaves overhang on shaped brackets, and there is a queen-post roof truss. The flanking outshuts have rectangular openings, and a small door is located on the south side of the southern outshut.

Inside, the roof of the main part of the barn has two intermediate queen-post trusses and two tiers of purlins, with a similar intermediate truss found in the midstrey. The farmhouse associated with the barn has been demolished, and only part of one other farm building remains.
