Description
No. 40 High Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the mid to late 18th century and has undergone some alterations. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, which is painted below the lower sill-band. It features a Welsh-slate roof with a painted moulded eaves cornice and a brick stack at the left end.
The exterior consists of three storeys and has a two-window range with a gabled rear wing. There are sill-bands present. The windows are boxed sashes, with 6/6 panes on the first floor and smaller 3/6 panes above. All windows have painted channelled voussoirs and keystones. On the ground floor to the left, there is a canted bay window with three-pane plate-glazing in each light and a pitched leaded roof. To the right, the entrance features a Classical architrave with pilasters, Corinthian capitals, paterae, and an open pediment. It has a Y-traceried fanlight, a panelled reveal, a six-panel door, and four renewed stone steps with a wrought-iron handrail on the right. The interior has not been inspected.
