Description

The terrace at 27-33 Albany Terrace comprises four houses, dating to around 1840, with subsequent extensions and alterations. The construction is painted stucco over brick, with slate roofs, and features brick chimney stacks with overhanging details and pots. The left return is pebbledash, while the right return is painted brick.

The plan is double-depth, with a cellar and two storeys, originally providing eight first-floor windows (arranged as 2:2:2:2). Architectural details include a plinth, sills, and moulded architraves to the first-floor windows. All houses have entrances on the right side, with two windows to the left. Windows are 2/2 sashes with horns in plain reveals with sills. The doors are six-panelled, with the lower pair flush-beaded, the upper four raised and fielded with bolection moulding, alongside sidelights with a flush-beaded bottom panel, a full-width overlight, and a door surround consisting of pilasters, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice, accessed via three roll-edged steps. Shutters, externally louvered, are present on the ground-floor windows of numbers 27, 29, and 31, while number 33 has moulded architraves with decorative "ears." The left return is blank, while the right return includes a 2/2 window to the ground-floor and a 1/1 window to the staircase landing, the latter featuring coloured glazing to the margin lights, all set within plain reveals with sills and segmental brick arches.

Each house has a two-storey brick and slate rear service wing with a chimney stack to the right, the wings joining at ground-floor level only. The rear elevations feature 6/6 sashes with horns and segmental arches.

Interior features include retained original staircases and fireplaces. Albany Terrace is located on the north side of Britannia Square, and is part of a significant Regency-era development.
