Description
23 St Johns is a house that forms the end of a terrace and currently serves as both a residence and a shop. It was built in the mid to late 18th century and has undergone some later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of red brick and features a slate roof that is hipped to the right. The eaves are dentilled and painted. There are stacks on both the left and right sides, which have oversailing details and pots.
The house has a timber doorcase with a pediment and an L-shaped plan that is single-depth. The left return is angled to fit the corner site, with the main entrance hall and staircase located at the center of the right return. There is a service range and stabling at the rear right of the property. The building stands three stories tall and includes a cellar.
On the first floor, there are five windows. All window openings have sills and flat gauged brick arches, with near-flush frames. The first and second floors feature 2/2 sash windows. The ground floor has a mid-20th century shopfront on the left with a central recessed entrance, and two 6/6 sash windows to the right.
On the right return, there are four first-floor windows. Two of the windows on the left are blind and set under a half-brick cambered head without sills, while the two on the right are 8/8 sashes with near-flush frames under segmental arched heads. The second-floor windows are 2/2, also with near-flush frames, moulded architraves, flat gauged brick arches, and stone sills. The ground floor has two blocked windows on the left that match the first floor, and to the right of the door, there is a 2/2 near-flush frame sash under a half-brick segmental arch.
The entrance features a six-panel door that is raised and fielded, topped with a blind gothic-traceried fanlight, although the doorcase has been replaced. There is a later two-storey range to the right with 6/6 sashes, and beyond that is a two-storey stable block that may be contemporary with the house, featuring cambered arch openings for the windows and a large double doorway. The interior has not been inspected.
