Description
This is a terrace of three houses located in Britannia Square, built around 1820 and subsequently altered. The houses are constructed of painted stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof punctuated by four partially rebuilt brick stacks featuring oversailing details and terracotta pots. They have a double-depth plan and were designed to appear as a single large house.
The terrace is three storeys high, with a cellar below, and contains five first-floor windows arranged in a 1:3:1 layout. The stucco detailing includes a plinth, full-height pilasters at the ends and flanking the three central windows, and a shallow break-forward for the entrances and first-floor windows. A panelled frieze runs along the top of the façade. The windows are primarily 6/6 sashes, with 3/3 sashes on the second floor; all are contained within plain reveals with sills. The central and return elevations each provide access, with doors consisting of six panels, the lower pair being flush-beaded, the upper panels raised and fielded to the central door, with the others being glazed. Each door is topped by a fanlight with radial glazing bars, and set within panelled reveals and Doric-style porches. The return elevations each feature three first-floor windows.
Internally, some original features remain, including open-well staircases with wreathed handrails, panelled shutters and doors, architraves, plaster cornices, and fireplaces, some with cast-iron hob-grates.
The terrace forms a unified group with the other listed buildings in Britannia Square, designed from 1820 around a central green. The layout is comparable to other developments in Worcester, such as Lansdowne Crescent, Lark Hill, and Rainbow Hill Terrace.
