Description

The property at 2 College Green is a corner and end-of-terrace house, dating back to approximately 1700, with extensions added in the late 18th or early 19th century, and further additions and alterations in later periods, although it has earlier origins. It is constructed of painted brick with a plain clay tile roof, partially hipped. Stone sills are present, and part of the west front features dentilled eaves. A moulded timber eaves cornice runs along the north elevation. The house has two main brick stacks, one at each end of the north range, with oversailing detail and pots. A timber porch fronts a central, projecting stucco bay of this wing. A remnant of a stone wall is visible in the lower right corner. A timber and lead canopy covers the west door.

The house’s plan features a main central entrance hall and staircase within the double-fronted north range, which extends to create an L-shaped configuration with a wing to the south. The principal (north) elevation is three storeys high, with a cellar below, and contains two first-floor windows. The brick detailing includes bands between the ground and first floors and between the first and second floors. Ground-floor and first-floor windows are 6/6 sashes in near-flush frames, set within flat, gauged brick arches; all except the left ground-floor window have thick glazing bars characteristic of the early 18th century. The second floor incorporates two-light mullion and transom windows, also dating to the early 18th century. A stone step leads to a six-panel door, the top pair of which are glazed, with the remainder being raised and fielded panels.

The west elevation is three storeys high and displays an asymmetric composition with irregular fenestration. It has three first-floor windows with 6/6 near-flush-frame sashes, sills, and cambered brick arches. The second-floor windows are similar, but the right-hand window has a square head. The ground-floor to the right incorporates a pair of small, two-light mullion windows with sills; both have square-pane leaded glazing. The window to the right has a side-hung iron-framed transom light fixed with external pin-hinges. A stone step leads to a two-panel door, with square-pane leaded glazing to the overlight. A further small window is located to the left of the door. A fire insurance plaque is affixed to the west elevation.

The interior of the property has not been inspected.

A section of the west elevation, while under the same roofline as No. 2 College Green, forms part of No. 3 College Green and has done since 1849. All listed buildings along College Green contribute to a significant group forming the setting for Worcester Cathedral to the north. The rear boundary wall to Nos. 2-6 College Green is part of the Monastic Precinct Wall, designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
