Description
Steps Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the 17th century and was remodeled in the 19th century. It is constructed of red brick with a rubble plinth and features part timber-framing. The building has a 20th-century brick stack on the left, a 19th-century stack on the right, and a 17th-century brick stack on the rear wall. The farmhouse has a 'U' plan, with the center infilled in the 19th century. It has irregular storeys, measuring one and a half to two and a half stories high on a raised plinth, with a cellar under the left wing. There are three irregular ranges of windows, mostly 19th-century three-light casements with segmental heads. A circa 1700 moulded brick string runs along the front and side of the left wing. The entrance is off-center to the left and is approached by a double flight of steps leading to a ledged door, which is sheltered by a renewed flat canopy supported by two scroll brackets. Square framing is visible on the right-hand front. Inside, the central rear room features chamfered and stopped beams, while the roof trusses have queen struts and trenched purlins.
