Description

The Abbey Hotel, built between 1848 and 1849, is located on Abbey Road and occupies the site of the Prior's House, replicating a 17th-century predecessor. The building is generally Jacobean in style and features three storeys constructed of random local stone with ashlar dressings, covered in heavy creeper. It has shaped gables and crenellated parapets, with string courses between the storeys. A notable feature is the two-storey oriel window and strapwork above the central porch, which is accessed by a curved flight of steps with strapwork balustrading. The windows include stone mullions and transoms, and there is a full-height angular bay with a plain parapet on the right side.

To the left, a late 19th-century portion of the building consists of two storeys and attics, made of Malvern stone with ashlar dressings and applied half-timber ornament on the upper storeys. This section has two gables with carved bargeboards, oriel windows, mullions, and transoms, as well as an arched moulded doorway, and it is linked to the main building. A modern wing to the south is not of special interest.
