Description

Northington Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 16th century, with 19th-century additions and alterations. It features a timber frame with painted brick infill, brick replacement walling, and tiled roofs. The building has three brick chimney shafts set diagonally on the main ridge, along with brick external stacks on the rear and side elevations. The layout is H-shaped, consisting of a hall and two cross-wings. The hall has two framed bays and an inserted fireplace in a through-passage that creates lobby entries. The cross-wings each have two bays, with an additional framed bay at right angles to the right cross-wing.

The farmhouse is two storeys high, with a cellar and attic, and has a dentilled eaves cornice on the front of the hall. The framing on the front elevation features square panels, with four panels from the sill to the wall-plate. There is a short, straight brace in the additional bay on the right side elevation, and the truss in the front left wing has two collars with two queen struts beneath the lower collar. The right wing's truss has three queen struts below the collar and swept raking-struts in the apex.

On the front elevation, the main part has a ground floor casement window with a cambered head and a first floor casement window. To the left, there is a doorway with a 19th-century panelled door that originally had a gabled canopy on console brackets, although the canopy is now missing. The left cross-wing gable end features a ground floor casement with a cambered head and a first floor casement. The right cross-wing gable end has both ground and first floor casement windows with cambered heads, as well as an attic light. The interior was inaccessible due to its derelict condition at the time of the survey in June 1984. At the rear, there are three hipped roof wings, two storeys high with a dentilled eaves cornice, and an outshut on the right side elevation.
