Description
This listing describes three 19th century gas street lamps, one of which was made by Hamilton Woods of Manchester.
The first lamp, located at the grid reference SO7644245481, is made of cast iron and features a Windsor lantern supported by four scrolled brackets. It stands on a barley-twist column above a moulded, studded ring on an octagonal lower shaft, which has a foliate, vase-shaped base. The ladder rest has twisted arms and moulded finials, although one finial is missing.
The second lamp, at SO7646045291, shares a similar design and construction. It is also made of cast iron with a Windsor lantern on four scrolled brackets, a barley-twist column, a moulded, studded ring, and an octagonal lower shaft with a foliate, vase-shaped base. This lamp's ladder rest also has twisted arms and missing one moulded finial.
The third lamp, found at SO7647645203, is constructed of cast iron and features a Windsor lantern supported by four scrolled brackets on a flared, reeded capital. It has a tapering reeded column with a moulded base, set on an octagonal plinth with a flared foot. The ladder rest has reeded arms with moulded finials. This lamp is attributed to Hamilton Woods of Manchester, and the plinth is marked with the founder's mark.
