Description

The Hermitage is a timber-framed and thatched cottage, likely dating back to the late 16th or early 17th century in its eastern bays, with later 17th-century additions. The original part of the cottage appears to be two storeys and three bays, and was built later in the 17th century. The roof of the original eastern bays is lower and displays more substantial timbering. An attic storey with three dormers cut into the thatch was added at a later date. The panels between the timbers are filled with painted brick. The base of the cottage is a mix of brick and stone. There are external chimney stacks, with one at the eastern end of the cottage abutting a thatched outshut bread oven. The rear of the building has undergone alterations in the 19th century and more recently. The majority of the windows are 2-light wooden casements. Small, shaped attic windows are situated within the gable ends, adjacent to the chimney stacks. A gabled tiled porch, supported by slender columns, has recently been added.
