Description

Hillside Farmhouse is a timber-frame farmhouse, originally dating to the 15th century, with significant alterations and extensions in 1678. The structure has been remodelled and infilled with red brick, topped with a plain tiled roof. Brick stacks are present, one off-centre, one lateral stack at the left, and paired diagonal chimneys on the lateral stack at the right; the right-hand gable has a curvilinear form. The original design likely comprised an open hall house with a service wing on the left and a solar cross-wing to the right. The cross-wing was remodelled and extended to the right for John Collins. The farmhouse has two storeys and attics, with a basement on the right. The central section represents the former two-bay hall and cross-passage, featuring narrow rectangular panels and 20th-century casement windows. A 4-light mullion and transom window, with ovolo moulded mullions and surrounds (with inner shutters), is located at the rear. The centre of the façade has a 20th-century door. The service end is now obscured by a projecting wing, originally used as a hop barn. The gabled cross-wing on the right is distinguished by brick modillion string courses and 20th-century casement windows; date plaques are set into each gable. A late 17th-century brick extension, also with a brick modillion string course and lateral stack, is set back on the far right. A rear timber-framed stair tower and adjoining gabled section are also present. Inside, chamfered beams feature scroll stops and a framed ceiling. On the ground floor of the right-hand section is an early to mid-18th-century china cupboard with cut bracket shelves, panelled doors, and fluted pilasters. A rear newel staircase is also included.
