Description
The Church of Saint Nicholas is a Grade II* listed building that dates from the 11th, 13th, and 15th centuries and was restored by George Gilbert Scott in 1855. It is constructed of blue lias stone and features plain tile roofs. The church includes a small three-stage tower with two-light bell openings and a tiled saddleback roof added in 1855. The nave has a central Norman south door, which is adorned with one order of colonettes, a zigzag arch, and a pellet hood mould. There is a 19th-century timber porch, and on either side of the nave, there are renewed Perpendicular style windows. The north side features two restored three-light Perpendicular windows.
The chancel is highlighted by two large 13th-century chamfered lancets at the ends and a pointed head door situated between a three-light east window with cinquefoil heads. Inside, the nave has a plastered roof supported by four tie beams. The 17th-century pulpit features a 15th-century carved top band. The chancel screen is from the 15th century and has been restored, while the Neo-Norman font sits on an older base. The chancel roof was added in the 19th century, and the altar rails from the 17th century have also been restored. There is an incised slab commemorating H. Field, who died in 1584, and some 14th-century glass is present in the north window of the nave. The east window was created by E. Franklin in 1892-1893.
