Description
The tower of the former parish church in Upton-upon-Severn, located on Church Street, is a Grade II* listed structure. This west tower, which belonged to a church demolished in 1937, dates back to the 14th century and is built of stone. It features three stages and has diagonal buttresses on the west face. Each face of the tower has a single long two-light bell opening with Y-tracery and a quatrefoil head, all set within a chamfered surround. The tower has a continuous chamfered arch. Originally topped with a spire, this was replaced in 1769 by an elegant octagonal timber cupola with a copper roof and lantern. The tower is finished with a stone cornice and corner urns. The cupola drum includes keyed bulls-eye panels and a modillion cornice. The architect responsible for this design was Anthony Keck, and the tower underwent restoration in 1982.
