Description
Elgar's Birthplace, along with the adjoining coach house and stables, is a house built in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of brick with parallel roof ridges, featuring a slate roof at the front and a tiled roof at the rear, along with brick end stacks. The building has two storeys and includes a dentilled eaves cornice and a two-celled plan.
The front elevation has four sixteen-pane sash windows, with the ground floor windows having cambered heads. The central entrance features a gabled porch supported by timber uprights, decorated bargeboards, and a central pendant. The entrance door is panelled and also has a cambered head.
The coach house and stables were built by Sir Edward Elgar's father and uncle, W H Elgar and Henry Elgar, and are located to the left of the house. This building served as the birthplace and home of Sir Edward Elgar from 1857 to 1859.
