Description
Cross House is a house dating from the early 19th century, with elements from the 17th and 16th centuries. It is constructed of painted brick and timber framing, topped with a tile roof. The building has two storeys and features a south-west front with two cross-wings, each one bay wide, flanking a one-bay central section. A single-storey extension covers the ground floor of the centre and the right-hand wing. The left-hand wing displays exposed timber framing arranged in five rows of square panels, with vertical struts between the tie-beam and collar, and it has a half-hipped roof. The right-hand wing features partly false timbering and a parapet, with chimneys located on the inside walls of both wings. The left-hand return wall has a bow that contains sash windows with glazing bars and a single-storey timber canted bay window. The return wall of the right-hand wing shows earlier framing with a curved tension brace and a bracket supporting an underbuilt jetty at the rear. The framing was raised and partially renewed, likely in the early 19th century, using timber of light scantling. The framing may have been re-exposed in the 20th century. The interior of the ground floor does not contain any visible features of architectural interest.
