Description

Virginia House is a house dating from the mid-18th century and early 19th century. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with stone dressings and a tile roof. The house is two storeys with an attic. The south facade has five bays, with a sixth bay set back on the right. The three central bays project forward, topped by a pediment. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars, set within gauged brick heads. The ground floor windows of the projecting central bays are recessed within round arches, which have stone impost blocks. A lunette window is within the pediment. Panelled pilasters flank the front door, supporting a cornice, and there are glazed openings above. A fanlight is above the door. An open brick porch has round arches on three sides, a frieze with paterae, and urns in the corners. Chimneys are located to the left and right of the third bay and towards the rear. A single-storey bow window projects from the west wall. A curved verandah, with renewed trelliswork, runs along the front. The north facade, dating from the mid-18th century, is of five bays and has two stone bands, boxed sash windows with glazing bars, and gauged brick heads with keystones. Inside, the staircase has stick balusters and a wreathed handrail.
