Description
The Red House is a mid-17th century house with earlier remains, constructed of brick with concealed timber-frame elements and a tiled roof. It has an E-plan and stands two storeys high with an attic. The bays are divided by pilasters featuring block capitals. The ground floor windows are set within sunken panels and have cambered heads, while the first floor windows in the cross-wings are within panels that have shouldered heads and keystones. The cross-wings consist of two bays each, with a central section of three bays; the outer bay of each cross-wing is blind. The middle ground floor and right-hand first floor windows of the central section are also blind. A lean-to addition covers the ground floor of the right-hand cross-wing. There are chimneys on either side of the central bays and a stair turret at the rear next to the southern cross-wing. Inside, the house features some exposed wall framing, a brick inglenook with a chamfered bressummer, and a 17th-century open-well staircase with a closed string and turned balusters.
