Description
The Windsor Memorial Cross, located about 15 metres south of the south porch of the Church of St Laurence, was erected in 1861, likely designed by William Butterfield. This memorial is constructed from ashlar stone and is in the Gothic revival style. It features three square steps leading up to a square base, each side of which has a quatrefoil panel with inscriptions. The base supports an octagonal socket stone with broach stops, and the tapered cross shaft has a square plan with engaged columns on the north and south sides, topped by a cross.
The inscriptions on the cross include on the east face: "Erected/ in token of/ respect for the/ Baroness Windsor/ Anno Domini/ 1861"; on the north face: "in/ Memory of/ the Honorable Robert/ Windsor-Clive MP/ who departed this life/ August 4th 1859/ Aged/ 35 years"; on the west face: "Them/ which sleep/ in Jesus/ will God bring/ with/ him"; and on the south face: "In/ memory of/ the Honorable William/ Windsor-Clive who/ departed this life/ September 14th 1857/ Aged/ 20 years".
