Description
This is a house, dating from circa 1640, with extensions added in the late 17th century and some late 20th-century restoration. The house is timber-framed with rendered infill on a sandstone plinth, with extensions in ashlar, all covered by a tile roof. It has an H-shaped plan, with a lateral stack to the hall range, which runs east to west, and a through-passage to the west end.
The south front has two storeys, with attics in the wings lit by two-light casement windows. The first floor has three windows: a four-light and three-light casement, and a four-light square oriel to the right. The ground floor mainly has four-light casement windows, with an entrance to the left of the hall range, accessible through a lean-to timber-framed porch containing a 17th-century door. An ashlar extension to the left is single-storey with an attic, lit by a gabled dormer. The timber framing is unpainted and features three square panels in height, with straight tension braces to the first floor and close-studding to the ground floor.
The interior includes numerous exposed ceiling beams, with chamfered and stopped spine beams with run-out stops; fireplaces with stone lintels; and some windows retain 17th-century sliding shutters. It is notable for retaining the untreated texture of the timber framing.
