Description
1 and 3 New Road is a building that was formerly known as the "Old Hop Pole Inn." Originally located on High Street, it was demolished around 1863 to allow for the entrance of New Road and was then re-erected at its current location. The existing structure is a two-storey building with an attic, dated "1572 WB," and is one storey shorter than the original inn. Most of the upper floors have been reconstructed using original geometrical timber framing, featuring a central jettied gable head for the attic and smaller jettied gable heads on each side, which likely have original carved barge boards. The lower floor is from the 19th century and includes an elaborate Gothic porch adorned with heraldic shields and a roof made of scalloped shingles, with windows on each side featuring Gothic wood tracery. Additionally, there is a facsimile gabled bay on the right-hand side. The building has 19th-century chimneys and a machine-tiled roof.
