Description
Lock number 55 on the Worcester and Birmingham Canal was built around 1805 and has undergone some repairs in the late 19th century and mid-20th century. It features a rectangular chamber with stone copings, although some of these have been repaired with brick. There is a single gate at the upper end and a pair of gates at the lower end. The mouth of the lock is made of blue brick with brick copings and includes steps on the north side. The 19th-century brick treads for opening the upper gate are still preserved. The lock number is incised in a stone block set into the mouth wall. This lock is part of the Tardebigge Flight, which is the longest in England, and is included for its group value.
