Description

The Giffard Arms Public House is a 1922 building designed by J.A. Swan, located on Victoria Street in Wolverhampton. It is constructed of ashlar stone with snecked coursing and features a tiled roof with ashlar stacks. The building is designed in the Early Tudor style and stands three storeys tall.

A prominent feature is the wide full-height canted bay window, which is flanked by entrances. The top cornice is adorned with carved bosses, including a central boss depicting a man peering through an arch, and is topped by a high coped parapet. The windows are elliptical-headed with transoms and leaded glazing, and there are similar blind panels between the storeys that display escutcheons featuring a Tudor rose, a portcullis, and the town arms. The richly moulded mullions, transoms, and angle shafts enhance the building's decorative appeal.

The entrances have three-centred heads and hood moulds with fleurons and stops. Overlights also feature three-centred heads, with panels above displaying crests of a falcon and hops, along with the lettering "W B and A.D.1922." The doors are battened with square lights. Additionally, there is a signboard on an enriched timber bracket, as well as enriched rainwater heads and square downspouts. The gables are coped, and there are end stacks.

Inside, the public house includes an inglenook fireplace and a bay window at the rear. This building is a notable example of its architectural style, showcasing well-carved details throughout.
