Description
The walls, railings, gates, and gatepiers encircling West Park in Wolverhampton were constructed in 1880 by Bayliss, Jones and Bayliss. They feature ashlar stone on a brick base, with cast-iron railings and gates. The low stone-coped walls are complemented by railings that have enriched finials. There are eight sets of single and paired enriched gates, while the piers display battered bases, cusped panels, cornices, and pyramidal caps. Some piers are gableted and topped with acorn finials. The two main entrances to the park, located to the north and south, are flanked by curved walls that have quatrefoil piercings. The park itself was designed by V.H. Vertegans between 1879 and 1881 on the site of the former Broad Meadows racecourse. This structure is included for its group value.
