Description

These are a mirrored pair of houses built in the early 1850s as part of a planned development by Henry Farrington, originally known as Hatherton Lake Villas. The houses are constructed of brick with painted stone and stucco dressings, topped by a hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves supported by brackets. Each house is three bays wide, with a shared fourth bay between them that contains a tunnel entrance with an elliptical brick arch on the ground floor. The ground floor features timber canted bay windows. The first-floor windows have architraves, sill bands, and cornices supported by console brackets. No. 7 retains its original 8-pane sashes, while the windows of No. 8 have lost their glazing bars. The doors are located in the middle bay of each house and are surrounded by round-headed elements under Ionic porches with pilaster responds; the capitals of the porch to No. 7 have lost some detail. Chimneys are located between the houses, one on either side of the tunnel, and also on the end walls. Chamfered quoins are visible on the ground floor.
