Description
The cholera memorial in Doctor's Piece Gardens was erected in 1849. It features a sandstone plaque with a rounded top. The inscription details the cholera outbreak that affected the parish of Willenhall in 1849, noting that the first death occurred on August 17 and the last on October 4, resulting in 292 deaths over 49 days. Due to overcrowding in the churchyard of St Giles, this area, part of the church estate and not yet consecrated, was first used for burials starting September 1. On three days, 15 burials occurred daily, with a total of 211 individuals interred here and in the churchyard. The inscription also reflects on the impact of the outbreak, which halted business and industry in the town.
