Description

These shops, located at 45 and 46 Market Place, Walsall, date from the mid-18th century. They are constructed of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with painted stone dressings and a slate roof. The building is three storeys high and originally comprised six bays, though the sixth bay appears to be a later addition in a matching style. The ground floor is occupied by retail premises, featuring a 19th-century door and window on the right-hand side and a tunnel entrance on the left. The tunnel entrance has an elliptical arch with decorative, chamfered false stones. Upper floor windows have stone sills; those on the first floor have stepped lintels adorned with decorated keystones. The first-floor windows in bays four and five are sash windows with glazing bars, while the sixth bay contains a single sash window. Bays four, five, and six on the second floor have six-pane sashes. The façade is finished with a plastered modillion cornice. A chimney is located on the left-hand side. The building demonstrates group value in its contribution to the character of the Market Place.
