Description
These shops, located at 69 and 72 Ablewell Street, were built in the early to mid-19th century. They are constructed of brick with a tile roof and stand three storeys high, with three bays each. Number 69, on the left, retains its original shop front, featuring two bowed windows with glazing bars and a central doorway. The shop front of Number 70 is 20th century. The first floor of Number 69 has a sashed window with glazing bars in the left bay, topped by a segmental lintel with a keystone. The middle window is blind and has a similar lintel. The right-hand window is a later 19th-century tripartite sash without glazing bars. The second floor of Number 69 has six-pane sashes in the outer bays, with a blind middle bay. The ground floor of Number 70 features a tunnel entrance with an elliptical arch. Chimneys are positioned on the left-hand gable and to the right of the middle bay. Number 70 is included in the listing for group value.
