Description
The Steward Aqueduct, located approximately 400 meters west of Spon Lane South, is an aqueduct built in 1828 by Thomas Telford. It was designed to carry the Old Main Line (Wolverhampton Level), which opened in 1769 and was realigned in 1790, over the New Main Line on the Birmingham Level. The structure is made of brick in English bond with sandstone dressings. It features two elliptical skew arches with chamfered voussoirs. A moulded string course transitions into the rusticated quoins of the abutments. An ashlar capping course supports cast-iron railings with intersecting arched heads. Buttresses have been added to the central cutwaters at an uncertain date.
