Description
Bishop Asbury's Cottage is a house that now serves as a museum, likely built around 1700. It is constructed of brick with a tile roof and has a rendered plinth. The building is one storey high with an attic and features two bays. The windows are casements with glazing bars, and those on the ground floor have segmental heads. The attic is illuminated by dormer windows. Straight joints indicate that the ground floor windows have been modified. There is a doorway on the right side, also with a segmental head. Inside, the right-hand room contains a chamfered axial beam and an inglenook with a chamfered bressummer. Historically, Francis Asbury, who lived in the house during his boyhood, emigrated to America in 1771, traveled extensively preaching the Methodist message, and was appointed one of the two superintendents, or bishops, of the Methodist Episcopal Church of America in 1784.
