Description
No 38 Birmingham Street is a mid-19th century shop row constructed of brick with painted stone or stucco dressings and a slate roof. It stands three storeys tall and features a south facade facing Birmingham Street, which consists of four bays with chamfered quoins on the upper storeys. The ground floor has 20th-century shop fronts, and the doorway in the second bay has a round head. The upper storey windows are sashed; the first-floor windows have architraves and cornices supported by brackets, while the second-floor windows feature architraves with segmental heads and keystones. An elaborate bracketed eaves cornice adds to the design, and there is a chimney on the left side. The right-hand corner of the building is curved.
On the right-hand return wall, the left bay is flanked by chamfered quoins and is treated similarly to the front elevation. To the right, there are two additional bays that rise to four storeys. The ground floor of this section is stuccoed and has three window openings with segmental heads, one of which is blind. The first and second-floor windows have architraves with segmental heads and keystones, while the third-floor windows, located under the eaves, have plain surrounds. There are two chimneys on the ridge.
