Description
The winding engine house at the former New Hawne Colliery was built in 1865. It is a single-storey structure made of red brick with gabled ends. The west gable features three windows, with the central window raised within the gable, all having semi-circular heads made of yellow brick and cast iron. These windows are generally damaged and lack glass. Each return side of the building also has three similar windows, along with pilasters and parapets at the gabled ends. The roof is covered with slates, and there is a stone inscribed with "NCIB" and the date above it. The building no longer contains its headstock or machinery, except for some cast iron capstan winding pulleys. It has been long disused and is in a generally dilapidated condition. The winding engine house is part of a group that includes the fan house, chimney, offices, workshops, and stores at the former New Hawne Colliery.
