Description
Nos 60 and 62 on Constitution Hill are a pair of buildings dating from around 1820 to 1830, originally constructed for Fenners and Betteridge, who were manufacturers of japanned goods, papier-mâché, and pearl inlay. The rear of the buildings has been altered for use as offices.
The front of the buildings is a three-storey, symmetrical façade made of painted brick, featuring a plinth, a painted stone cornice, and a parapet with coping. The windows are revealed sash types, with the second floor having squat windows, some of which still retain their glazing bars. All windows have block sills and moulded friezes that are flanked by consoles supporting thin cornices.
The central entrance is a waggon arch that occupies two bays and is topped with a segmental arch flanked by pilasters. It features large console brackets supporting a panelled frieze and a projecting cornice, which is surmounted by a swept end pedestal displaying the Royal Arms of the 1801-1837 type. This lively polychrome composition is set against a trophy of small arms, poles, trumpets, and flags, likely made of Coade stone. To the right of the archway, there is an office doorway that has giant elongated coupled consoles instead of pilasters, with curvilinear fronts that are panelled, supporting sections of entablature with cartouche panels and a moulded cornice above. This building is an early and unaltered example of a works elevation.
