Description

The Hen and Chickens Public House, dating to circa 1880, is a large corner public house with Italianate detailing related to number 25. It is constructed of yellow brick with dressings in ceramic, red brick, stone, and terracotta. The building has three storeys and a splayed corner. The upper floors are articulated into coupled or single bays by giant banded ceramic brick pilasters, which rise to the springing of the second-floor window arches. Carved console brackets, alternating with floral terracotta metopes, support a moulded stone cornice. A yellow brick parapet sits above the cornice. Terracotta diaper panels and projecting heads within roundels are set above the segmental arched first-floor windows. The public house front features pilasters, including the shop front at number 29. The shop front fascia has a fretted valance to the cornice.
