Description
These are a pair of small manufactories dating from the late 19th century, with minor alterations in the late 20th century. They are constructed of red brick with painted stone dressings, a central ridge stack, and a slate roof. The buildings have an irregular U-shaped plan; each half of the front range is a mirrored reflection of the other, and a rear workshop range runs along the northern boundary, extending the full length of the plot, which borders the Warstone Lane cemetery.
The front elevation is symmetrical, consisting of three storeys and two bays for each unit. A common central passage leads to rear workshops and a yard. The outer bays feature semi-circular arched doorways with overlights and panelled doors, the arches including painted keystones and imposts within recessed surrounds and supported by moulded brackets. The inner bays have single window openings beneath gauged brick arches, and contain 3-over-3 pane margin-glazed sash windows. The first floor has narrow sash windows above the doorways, and wider sashes to the second bays. The upper floor has a combination of wide and narrow sashes, mirroring the arrangement below, with painted flat lintels below a blue brick eaves band. A semi-circular brick-arched entrance gives access to the rear yard, which includes a two-storey workshop range that has been altered at No. 4.
The buildings form a group with Nos. 3 Warstone Parade East and 160 Warstone Lane. They represent part of an industrial street frontage, reflecting architectural detailing characteristic of a specialist industrial quarter of Birmingham, now recognised as being of international significance.
